Decades have passed since St. Louis flourished as a center for footwear production. Back in the 70s, Gateway Shoes had over one hundred people making shoes for retailers all over the U.S. But times changed and most of the shoe industry outsourced to China to take advantage of cheap labor and non-existent environmental regulations.
We decided that it was more important to keep our factory open and "find a way."
To accomplish this, we found industries that needed a dedicated stock of similar shoes in many sizes and turned our focus to serving niche markets in the formal wear, marching band and work uniform industries. By making the best quality shoes for each of these markets, stocking them for quick delivery in their peak seasons and offering factory-direct pricing, we have survived and are optimistic for the future.
Today we employ a team of craftsmen and women with hundreds of years of cumulative experience in the shoe manufacturing business. Their expertise along with our proprietary soling process using DESMA machinery allows us to effectively compete with anyone in the world.
We buy materials from vendors in the USA and all over the world. Quality and value drive our vendor relationships. Each shoe factory job is believed to affect at least 7 other jobs in the community. We believe in our community and our country.
Our shoes are crafted with pride in the USA using USA materials. We have vendors in 25 different states! So buying the exclusive, direct-attached, Gateway tuxedo shoes is not only helping you be more profitable, it is supporting your customer!! All the money you spend on imported items goes directly offshore; while money spent with Gateway gets spent in the USA, helping everyone!
While many shoe companies chose to move offshore and ignore people's environmental concerns, Gateway is conscience of the world we live in. We use post-industrial, recycled content in many of our materials and packaging. Plus, by manufacturing the shoes in the USA, we have a lower carbon footprint compared to the importers we compete with who need to ship their shoes into the U.S. from halfway across the world.
At Gateway Shoes, we believe in our community and our country. Our primary goal is to operate a clean and safe factory where our skilled team can cut, sew, stamp, string, last, trim, clean, lace, bag, and box high quality American made shoes. We take pride in knowing that each shoe factory job is believed to affect at least 7 other jobs in the community.
Part of our dedication to our community is also exhibited in our support of the local public schools, parades, and community organizations in the small rural town where our production facility resides.
Plus, we are founding sponsors of the St. Louis Strollathon that benefits the International Rett Syndrome Foundation and numerous trade organizations and magazines.
Gateway is very proud of our ability to keep American workers employed through finding niche industries like performance footwear for bands and orchestras. We continue to innovate our shoes and the process for making them through the use of computerized sewing, dye sublimation, proprietary upgrading of the lasting machine mechanical and control systems, and finding the best sources for raw materials. With the support of the thousands of customers around the USA and the world, Gateway looks forward to continuing the art of shoemaking in the USA.
